Sullenberger's interview impressed me for all the points recounted so well above. But there was one more thing he said that I think applies. When asked by Couric (CBS needs to find a less-vacuous host) if he doubted he would make it, Sullenberger replied firmly and confidently: "Never. I knew I could do it".

Readers may recall the United Airlines DC10 that put down in Sioux City Iowa back in 1989. It suffered a catastrophic failure of the engine in the tail section during cruise, rendering all hydraulic systems - and all flight controls - inoperative. The airplane should have crashed, leaving but bits and pieces spread among the cornfields. Instead, the crew made the airport through sheer ingenuity, courage, and a never-say-die attitude. They used the only thing left - the two under-wing engines - to control the airplane.

Interviewed a short time after the accident (about half the passengers survived - the cockpit crew only because it separated during the crash) Denny Fitch, one of the crew, was asked a similar question. He said that he "never for one minute doubted that we could do it". "Your attitude determines your altitude. If you think you can't.. you won't".

The common thread here is confidence.

An old aphorism of Aviation says "There are bold pilots... there are old pilots... but there are no old bold pilots".

Sullenberger and Fitch would not be here to tell their story if they allowed doubt to enter the equation.
